Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the request and supplies its results. We do not keep a separate log or copy of those search terms.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email sent to us may be retained so a response can be prepared. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a page loads, servers may automatically record basic technical facts about that visit:
- Page-view dates and times
- Browser name and version
- Device class and operating system
- Pages opened and time spent on them
- A referring site, when one is supplied
- The device's assigned IP address
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small device files used to understand patterns such as popular pages and exit points. Analytics providers help combine that traffic into reports. Browser controls can block cookies, although a disabled cookie may change how some functions behave.
What We Do With This Data
- Diagnosing faults and maintaining reliable performance
- Routing a search request to the selected outside service
- Learning which pages visitors use and where content needs work
- Operating, securing, and improving the site
- Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
We do not maintain, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. Columbus County information explains how to reach the sheriff, the North Carolina courts, the SBI Criminal Information and Identification Section, and the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry. Visitor information is not assembled into third-party records or consumer reports. This site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Their own privacy policies govern submitted information, including retention and disclosure practices that we do not control. Review the applicable provider policy before entering a search.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to the Columbus County Sheriff, court portals, North Carolina agencies, legal resources, or outside search tools. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's policy governs. Check it before sharing personal information.
Advertising providers may use their own systems to follow activity across websites for targeted advertising. We do not operate those systems.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:
- Advertising networks that place ads
- Analytics vendors measuring traffic and performance
- Search providers handling a query submitted to their tool
- A government or law-enforcement body acting under valid legal process
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable standard safeguards are used for collected data. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, so a breach can never be ruled out.
Users Under 18
The service is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If such information is identified, it will be deleted after notice.
Your Data Rights
Rights over personal data depend on the law that applies where a visitor lives. The North Carolina Public Records Law, Chapter 132, governs records held by public agencies, not visitor data held by this private site. North Carolina G.S. 15A-502 and 15A-503 govern fingerprinting, photographing, and disposition data in the state criminal-history system. Depending on applicable law, a visitor may be able to:
- Object to certain forms of processing
- Request deletion of information we hold
- Ask to correct inaccurate information
- Request access to personal data we maintain
Updates to This Policy
This policy may be revised. A new version will appear here with an updated effective date, so visitors should review it periodically.
